This Fresh new design is your answer to "Can I do a frames-based site that works harmoniously with search engines; and that allows for intuitive navigation; and that also is smart enough to remember which page goes where in the frameset?" I think this is the Ultimate in Frames-based navigation. If you need a framed solution, this is for you! Matisse will break out of "foreign" framesets and prevent content pages from opening without the parent frameset! To see for yourself, right-click (or cmd-click in Mac) this page and select "Open Frame in New Window".

Here is an overview of how the site works:

  • The site opens with a standard (non-frames) page.
  • The opening page contains links to all the main pages.
  • If you (or anyone else) attempt to open a page outside its frameset, the script will go out, find the proper frameset... and everything together the way it's supposed to be!

The Navbar in the left frame uses simple rollovers to change the triangle color and to provide user feedback. The menu link is automatically set to a mustard color and denotes the page currently loaded in the main frame. Each page that loads in the main frame executes a javascript swap image that sets the appropriate link to green. Your visitors will always know which page they are on... even if they click the back or forward buttons on their browser!

The site is designed to be fully compatible with the following browsers:

  • IE 3 (except for rollovers- which fail without error- IE3 does not support image swaps)
  • NN3.01 (fully)
  • IE4 and up
  • NN6

The site is a bit scrunched (but navigable) at 640 x 480. Looks very nice at 800 x 600; and is absolutely gorgeous at higher resolutions!
